Hobyrim V. Rahms, also known as Steelsong, or Hobyrim Steelsong, is a playable character in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. When you first encounter him on any route, he introduces himself as Hobyrim Vandam.

Warren Report[]

Neutral Route[]

Hobyrim Vandam (Age 31). A blind swordsman from a foreign land. It seems he is connected to the Dark Knights somehow, but he will not speak on the matter.

  • Regardless of whether you recruit him at Golyat or at Qadriga Fortress, or refuse his recruitment, his Warren Report is the same for all incidents.

Law Route[]

A blind swordsman. Denam went to his aid when he was attacked by Bakram forces at Rhime. He petitioned to join the Order of ___ after learning Denam was at war with the Dark Knights.

He holds them accountable for his loss of sight, and appears to know the Dark Knight Ozma, but will not elaborate on their history.

  • After the Event with Ozma at Krysaro in Chapter IV

A Lodissian swordsmaster who once served with the Dark Knights Loslorien. He is the second son of Stratarchis Vogras, a Lodissian of great influence, and is brother to the Dark Knight Balxephon. He bears the title "Steelsong."

Accused of patricide, his eyes were gouged out, and he was banished from Lodis. Hobyrim came to Valeria seeking vengeance against the true culprit, his brother Balxephon.

The Dark Knight Ozma was formerly his betrothed.

If Dismissed[]

He joined the Order of ___ in their struggle against Loslorien, but was later dismissed by Denam.

Story[]

Hobyrim is descended from House Rhams, one of the Holy Lodissian Empire's most respected families. He is the second son of Stratachis Vorgas, and brother to Balxephon V. Rahms, as well as lover to Ozma Moh Glacius, at one point even being her betrothed.

He once served with the Dark Knights Loslorien alongside Ozma and Balxephon, under the command of Lanselot Tartaros.

Framed for the murder of his father, and wrongly accused of patricide, his eyes were gouged out, and he was banished from Lodis. He eventually found his way to Valeria, seeking vengeance against the true culprit, his own blood brother Balxephon.

He met with Denam Pavel of the Resistance, and joined their forces after they came to his aide.

He was reunited with Ozma in the city of Krysaro. He bared all to Denam, revealing his past as a Dark Knight, as well as his ties to Balxephon, whom had murdered both their parents, and assisted in ousting the Senate of Lodis, and supplanting their own supporters. Hobyrim swore revenge upon Balxephon, but also reaffirmed his loyalty to Denam's, and the Resistance's cause calling it "a worthy cause to fight and die for".

Personality[]

Hobyrim is less of a politician than his father and elder brother, but more of a knight. He's a resolute and honorable man, who broke rank with Loslorien over his father's murder and the Pope's insurrection. Even when reduced to the life of a pariah, Hobyrim is secretive, but reluctant to outright lie or deceive.

The battlefield is where Hobyrim thrives. Even after losing his sight, he is shown to be exceptionally skilled with a blade. After the Heim Conflict, he expresses gratitude to Denam for helping him rediscover the joy of a noble victory.

Recruitment[]

Hobyrim is recruitable in Chapter 3, but the circumstances change across routes.

Lawful Route[]

Hobyrim will be a guest during the battle with Ozma at Rhime. Keep him alive until Ozma retreats at low HP, and he'll offer to join.

Chaotic Route[]

Hobyrim will be a guest when battling Modiliani at Bahanna Highlands. If he is kept alive, he will offer to join afterwards.

Neutral Route[]

Hobyrim Golyat

A blind Hobyrim fights off several would-be captors in Golyat

There are two opportunities to recruit Hobyrim following optional battles. Unlike the other routes, Hobyrim does not partake in the battles and does not need to be protected.

  1. After facing Ganpp at Tynemouth Hill, move to Krysaro for a scene. Then, go to Qadriga Fortress for a battle against Botis. Afterwards, you'll be given the choice to recruit Hobyrim.
  2. After battling Nybeth at Ndamsa Fortress, go to Golyat and defeat the mercenary Orgeau. A scene with Hobyrim will play, during which he will offer to join.

Overview[]

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)[]

While he no longer can abuse Petrification as he did in the previous version, Hobyrim is still a great melee unit.

His DEX score remains one of the best in the game, and he joins with a few levels in 2H Katanas and the skill Preempt, which is very useful to help him avoid melee attacks. On the downside, he's likely to be the first Swordmaster you recruit, so he'll take some time to catch up.

As suggested in the Swordmaster page, focus on avoiding damage: Set the skills Parry, Dodge, Sidestep and Spell Ward as you see convenient for the battles, Knockback is also very useful, especially when combined with Preempt and Counterattack. War Dances are mildly useful, but this class will need all the TP it can spend on action skills, so use them sparingly.

For the endgame, you'll have a selection of Katanas with protection bonuses against ailments (Charmproof, Stunproof, etc...), which is very useful to further cover his weaknesses. Choose any you prefer, and remember to equip the respective Augment skill.

As all unique characters, Hobyrim gets the added bonus of better stats compared to generics. And even if you don't use Swordmasters that much, he's needed to recruit Ozma, so there's no reason not to recruit him first.

Trivia[]

  • Keeping with the Goetia demonology theme in the series, Hobyrim is derived from Haborim, the 23rd spirit of the Goetia and Great Duke of Hell. Haborim is said to appear in the form of a man with a handsome body but possessing three heads - a serpent's, a man with two stars on his forehead, and that of a cat. He can also increases a man's wit and gives true answers on private matters of others unconditionally.
  • He shares some characteristics with Cidolfus Orlandeau from Final Fantasy Tactics. Both are swordmasters of renown, born into high nobility, who were stripped of their title for someone else's ambition, becoming fugitives, and had their deaths faked to hide their identities (though, not so willingly in Hobyrim's case).
  • It is implied during the scene of "The Two Prisoners" in Chapter III Neutral, that if you refuse his recruitment, he will then offer his services to Leonar instead.

Dismissal Quote[]

It would seem I've failed to live up to your expectations.
